Patiala: National Green Tribunal (NGT) chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goyal on Friday declared that polluted and depleting natural resources had become a big challenge and to deal with it, a step needed to be taken on a war footing.
Speaking at an event in Patiala, also attended by Rajya Sabha member and environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal and Punjab minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Just Goyal said: “No single party can do the work of environmental protection, so governments, social workers and citizens have to make joint efforts. It is the government's responsibility to provide a clean environment. Further, there is a need to dispose of the piles of garbage that have become mountains as a result of which the air and water along with earth have become deadly for human life in most cities of our country.”
The event was an annual conference organised by the local district administration and Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), regarding the implementation of the district environmental plan.
Hayer said the Punjab government was following directions given by NGT seriously and was committed to fulfilling its responsibility toward environment. “On August 5, a campaign against single-use plastic will be launched across the state under Bhagwant Mann,” he said.
